UK ready to support Nigerian government (07/10/2009)
Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, met Chief Ojo Maduekwe, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on Wednesday 7 October.
During their meeting the Ministers underlined the importance of the UK-Nigeria partnership and cooperation on a range of bilateral issues including migration and anti-corruption work. The Ministers also discussed the Commonwealth and regional issues of concern in West Africa.
The Foreign Secretary took the opportunity to welcome the news of the Niger Delta amnesty and the progress made so far as an important step towards finding a sustainable solution to conflict in the Delta. Continued peaceful dialogue between all parties and a framework for providing longer-term social and economic development for communities will be essential to maintaining this progress.
The UK stands ready to support President Yar'Adua and the Nigerian government in this where we can.
